I. SYSTEM OVERVIEW

Kael'thir is the oldest fully cultivated star system in Pelari space — the first successful attempt to engineer not a single world but an entire stellar environment as a coherent living ecology. Over nearly eight thousand years, the Pelari have shaped Kael'thir into something that resists easy classification: it is simultaneously a civilization, a biosphere, and a biological archive.

The system's defining feature is not any individual world but the relationship between all of them. Energy flows outward from the Stellar Garden in the inner system, carried by the Veilwater — a cultivated interorbital biological medium that fills the space between planetary orbits — to inhabited worlds, drifting habitats, orbital reef structures, and the megafauna that move through the system on migratory circuits. Every significant body in Kael'thir participates in this metabolic network. Nothing here is ecologically isolated.

Terran personnel entering Kael'thir consistently report the same disorientation: the expectation of empty space between planets does not survive contact with a system in which that space is visibly, measurably alive. The Veilwater causes sensor scatter and requires hull sterilization protocols on departure.

STELLAR CHARACTERISTICS & ARCHITECTURE
stars
Primary Star: KaelII
Mass0.92 solar masses
Luminosity0.79 solar luminosities
Temperature5,540 K
System Age6.1 billion years
Stellar ActivityStable (low UV output)

Kael is a stable G5-V yellow main sequence dwarf. Its output is consistent and its activity level low, producing minimal flare events and a radiation environment that Pelari bioengineering has had eight thousand years to optimize around. The Stellar Garden organisms in the inner system are specifically calibrated to Kael's spectral output.

Vaelura: The Blooming Ocean

Vaelura is the oldest major cultivated world in Kael'thir. Its most iconic features are reef continents: vast living structures spanning thousands of kilometers, rising from the seafloor to function simultaneously as habitat, ecological processor, and Concord computational substrate. Beauty here is not layered on top of function but expressed through it.

1.18 AU | OC-H2-B4-IC-S

Lethyra'vaen: Floating Forest World

The primary population world of Kael'thir. Its defining feature is three great floating kelp-forest archipelagos—continent-scale masses of cultivated macro-algae covering a third of the planetary surface. The surface is not a floor. The forest is the space between anchor and canopy, lit from above, inhabited throughout its water column.

1.74 AU | OC-H3-B3-IC-R

Thiraval: The Deep Archive

A pale ice shell broken at the equatorial band by open dark water. Below the access zone, the ocean descends into cold, dark abyssal depths which house the 'memory reefs'—biological architecture optimized for data retention. They store the design history of the entire Kael'thir system. Access is heavily restricted.

AeluronIV-B
TypeRinged ice giant
Distance6.8 AU

The "Ring Garden". An arc of slow-growing biological structures threaded through the original ring material over several thousand years. From a distance, rings show a faint blue-green luminescence along the inner edge.

Kael'thir BeltIV-C
TypeAsteroid belt
Distance9-14 AU

Early interplanetary bioengineering experiment sites and active bio-mining zones. Biological extraction organisms refine asteroid material autonomously.

ItherynIV-D
TypeFrozen dwarf
Distance27 AU

Subsurface ocean maintains unknown ancient biological structures. The Thiraval Concord holds archive records of them but restricts access. Flagged for investigation.

Distance40+ AU

Contains autonomous micro-biosphere packages released ~1,200 years ago. Evolving independently in extreme cold and radiation, demonstrating accelerating mutation.

SYSTEM-LEVEL FEATURES

The Stellar GardenV-A

The metabolic engine of Kael'thir, located 0.1-0.8 AU from Kael. It converts stellar energy into biological feedstock via Heliophyte Swarms (massive star-feeding organisms 80–200km across) and Stellar Lattice Reefs. Energy flows from Star to Garden, through the Veilwater, and out to the inhabited worlds.

The VeilwaterV-B

A cultivated biological medium filling the space between planetary orbits, composed of diffuse engineered microorganisms and nutrient vesicles. Visible as a pearlescent haze, it causes sensor scatter and requires strict biofilter and hull sterilization protocols for visiting vessels. The Veilwater connects the system ecology.

Status & AccessVI-A

Sovereign Pelari territory. Terran vessels require advance authorization and must follow designated corridors to avoid sensitive zones or migration routes. Diplomatic access to Vaelura and Lethyra'vaen is permitted; Thiraval remains restricted.

Scientific ValueVI-B

Kael'thir represents eight thousand years of accumulated ecological engineering practice. The knowledge stored in living form across this system informs Terran understanding of extreme-scale biological computing and ecological management.

gpp_bad
Ecological RisksVI-C

Primary risks are ecological. Unsterilized Terran vessel surfaces introduce harmful biological material. High-energy propulsion or weapons discharge within the inner system is strictly prohibited due to Veilwater sensitivity.

Open Research Questions

01

Research Question 01

What are the structures in Itheryn's subsurface ocean?

Survey organisms have confirmed the presence of ancient biological structures in the subsurface ocean of Itheryn (27 AU). The Thiraval Concord holds archive records of them but has not retrieved them. Their nature—abandoned experiments or dormant organisms—remains unknown.

02

Research Question 02

How integrated is the Thiraval Concord with its archive?

In the deepest sections of Thiraval's reefs, biologists cannot map the boundary between Concord computation tissue and archive memory tissue. It functions as a single biological system, acting as an archivist rather than purely an advisory node.

03

Research Question 03

What has the Outer Drift Cloud produced?

Self-contained micro-biosphere packages released 1,200 years ago into the Outer Drift Cloud have evolved in isolation. Each 50-year survey returns radically different, highly adapted organisms that Pelari scientists can no longer fully categorize.
